Protective role of DHEAS in age-related changes in bone mass and fracture risk: A mendelian randomization study

Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism Jun 26, 2021

Yokomoto-Umakoshi M, Umakoshi H, Iwahashi N, et al. - A mendelian randomization analysis was performed to evaluate the role of dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEAS) in age-related changes in bone mineral density (BMD) and fracture risk. Researchers used single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with serum DHEAS concentrations as instrumental variables (4 SNPs for main analysis; 4 SNPs for men and 5 SNPs for women in sex-related analysis). They collected summary statistics from relevant genome-wide association studies. It was shown that DHEAS was correlated with elevated BMD and reduced fracture. The outcomes demonstrate that DHEAS may play a protective role in decreasing fracture risk, mainly by increasing bone mass.
