Topical 5% tranexamic acid with 30% glycolic acid peel: A useful combination for accelerating the improvement in melasma

Dermatologic Therapy Aug 29, 2021

Sahu P, Dayal S, Bhardwaj N, et al. - Comparable results were obtained using topical TXA with GA peel in combination vs GA peel alone in melasma management, but patients receiving combination treatment show earlier therapeutic response in comparison to patients treated with GA peel alone.

  • Patients in the combination group received treatment with 30% GA peel at 2 weekly intervals with 5% TXA solution applied twice daily and those in control group received treatment with only 30% GA peel every 2 weeks for 12 weeks.

  • When compared within the group, there was a significantly decreasing trend regarding the melasma area severity index (MASI) score, but the two groups had no statistically significant difference at 12 weeks.

  • Similarly, both the groups showed significant improvement in Hi-MELASQOL and HRQOL, but there was no statistically significant difference between them.

  • Patients in both groups experienced trivial side effects, which did not lead to stoppage of therapy.
