Three-year effect of phakic intraocular lenses on the corneal endothelial cell density

Clinical Ophthalmology Jan 24, 2020

Shaaban YM, et al. - In this prospective observational cohort study, researchers contrasted the impact of three different phakic intraocular lenses (pIOLs) on the corneal endothelial cell density (ECD). Participants in the study were 30 patients (60 eyes) with axial myopia of − 6.50 to − 22.00 diopters (D). According to findings, all pIOLs cause ECD to decrease. The anterior chamber pIOLs tend to be linked to more cell loss compared with posterior chamber pIOLs. Surgical insult is the major factor responsible for the early loss of endothelial cells, while the material from which the pIOL is produced may be an important factor in the persistent loss of corneal endothelial cells over long periods of time.
