Sperm parameters before and after COVID-19 mRNA vaccination

JAMA Jun 22, 2021

Gonzalez DC, Nassau DE, Khodamoradi K, et al. - Given that the clinical trials did not evaluate reproductive toxicity and there is a reported correlation of SARS-CoV-2 with reduction in sperm parameters, researchers sought to evaluate sperm parameters before and after mRNA vaccine administration. In this single-center prospective study conducted at the University of Miami, healthy volunteers aged 18 to 50 years who were scheduled for mRNA COVID-19 vaccine were recruited through flyers posted throughout the university hospital and internal listserve emails. Forty-five men volunteered (median age, 28 years); at a median of 75 days after the second dose, collection of follow-up samples was done. No significant reductions in any sperm parameter was noted among this small cohort of healthy men. It is unlikely that the vaccine would affect sperm parameters as the vaccines contain mRNA and not the live virus. Per results, all sperm parameters showed statistically significant increases, the magnitude of change is within normal individual variation and may be affected by regression to the mean. In addition, the rise may be because of the raised abstinence time before the second sample. No further decline was evident in men with oligospermia.
