Risk factors for central line–associated bloodstream infections in children with tunneled central venous catheters

Paioni P, et al. - Researchers examined the epidemiology of and the risk factors for central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSIs) in tunneled central venous catheters (CVCs) inserted in children at the University Children's Hospital Zürich between January 2009 and December 2015. In 193 patients with 284 tunneled CVCs, they observed 55 CLABSIs. Independent risk factors for CLABSI were gastrointestinal disease and age 2 to 5 years. Risk of CLABSI was higher in tunneled CVCs with a dwell time of over 90 days in children without the gastrointestinal disease.
