Proteomics and transcriptomics of the hippocampus and cortex in SUDEP and high-risk SUDEP patients

Neurology® May 28, 2021

Leitner DF, Mills JD, Pires G, et al. - In the present study, the researchers identified the molecular signaling pathways underlying sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP) and high-risk SUDEP compared with control patients with epilepsy. For proteomics analyses, they assessed the hippocampus and frontal cortex from microdissected postmortem brain tissue of 12 patients with SUDEP and 14 patients with non-SUDEP epilepsy. The SUDEP proteome and high-risk SUDEP transcriptome were comparable to those in other patients with epilepsy in the hippocampus and cortex, consistent with diverse epilepsy syndromes and comorbid conditions linked to SUDEP. Larger cohorts, different epilepsy syndromes, and additional anatomic regions may be studied to identify molecular mechanisms of SUDEP.
