Leukocytes, collateral circulation, and reperfusion in ischemic stroke patients treated with mechanical thrombectomy

Stroke Oct 25, 2019

Semerano A, Laredo C, Zhao Y, et al. - In stroke survivors treated with mechanical thrombectomy (MT) with varying degrees of collateral circulation and reperfusion, researchers assessed the contribution of neutrophil and lymphocyte counts to hemorrhagic complications and functional outcome. A total of 433 consecutive ischemic stroke survivors treated with MT were retrospectively analyzed. Researchers found that neutrophil and lymphocyte counts were dynamic parameters related to hemorrhagic complications and long-term outcome in MT-treated patients. The extent of collateral circulation and brain reperfusion success was found to influence these associations' strengths, and highlight the dual role of leukocytes in acute stroke.
