Frailty as a predictor of mortality in older adults within 5 years of psychiatric admission

International Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry Feb 08, 2020

Benraad CEM, et al. - Researchers examined the predictive value of frailty for mortality in older patients following an acute admission to a geriatric psychiatry hospital. They undertook a clinical cohort study including 120 older patients admitted to a psychiatric hospital from February 2009 to September 2010; a 5-year follow up was performed. Among these patients, 63 (53%) patients were reported as frail [Frailty Index (FI) ≥ 0.25] and 59 (49%) had died within 5 years. Independent of the covariates, the FI prophesied mortality with an HR of 1.78 per 0.1 point rise. The analysis thereby suggests a strong predictive value of frailty for mortality, independent of age, gender, multimorbidity, and functional status. This intimates the possible value of frailty in targeting inpatient psychiatric treatment and aftercare according to patients' life expectancy.
