Distribution and outcomes of infection of Mycobacterium avium complex species in cystic fibrosis

Journal of Cystic Fibrosis Aug 09, 2019

Azar M, et al. - Researchers intended to generate data on Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) species distribution and infection outcomes in cystic fibrosis (CF) in this single center, retrospective study with 23 CF cases and 57 MAC isolates. MAC isolates species detection was done with MLSA of rpoB and the 16S 23S ITS region. Among participants, infection with M. aviumwas was detected most frequently (65.2%). Higher rates of nontuberculous mycobacterial disease, younger age, and sharper drop in lung function before infection were observed in relation to M. intracellulare. Compared with other MAC species, M. intracellulare infection was associated with worse clinical outcomes.
