Are heterozygous carriers for hereditary fructose intolerance predisposed to metabolic disturbances when exposed to fructose?

American Journal of Clinical Nutrition Jul 12, 2018

Debray FG, et al. - Researchers investigated if adverse effects of fructose exposure (acute hypoglycemia, renal tubular acidosis, and hyperuricemia) are more likely to be seen in asymptomatic carriers for hereditary fructose intolerance (HFI) vs the general population. They found that, relative to control subjects, postprandial fructose metabolism was not significantly altered among heterozygous carriers of hereditary fructose intolerance. However, a postprandial increase in plasma uric acid concentration was detected in these subjects in response to ingestion of a modest amount of fructose. Such an effect was absent in control subjects.
