American Journal of Forensic Medicine and Pathology Mar 23, 2020

Cuchara B, et al. - As in DC, there has been a tendency for lower suicide rate than the rest of the country, researchers examined the factors such as medical history and toxicology results in this retrospective review. During the 8 years (2009–2016) of study duration, 394 suicides occurred. Suicide was mostly committed by hanging (31.2%), firearms (20.3%), or drug intoxication (15.7%). Decedents were observed to be of an average age of 44.5 years. Similar to national statistics, males vs females committed suicide at a higher rate (77.9% vs 22.1%). As per the toxicology data, the most frequently involved drugs were ethanol (26.4%), antidepressants (20.1%), opioids (14.9%), and benzodiazepines (12.9%), although the finding of no drugs was most common (33.7%). Presence of ethanol was reported in 5 methods of suicide that comprise death by hanging, drowning, firearm, suffocation, and poisoning. These findings could be valuable for public health officials when confronting the issue of suicide.
