Efficacy of microneedling vs fractional non-ablative laser to treat striae alba: A randomized study

American Journal of Clinical Dermatology Jan 11, 2019

Naspolini AP, et al. - Investigators analyzed the abdominal surface of 20 females to examine the effectiveness of a neodymium:yttrium–aluminum–perovskite 1340 nm non-ablative fractional laser (NAFL) and the microneedling (MN) technique in the treatment of striae alba (SA). They took photographs and skin biopsy samples of all the candidates before treatment and after the third and fifth treatment sessions. They observed increment in collagen and elastic fibers after the third and fifth treatment sessions in both the treatment processes. They calculated the mean pain score of 5.23 vs 2.39 for MN group vs the NAFL group by using the Visual Analog Scale. The mean duration of adverse effects in the NAFL group vs the MN group was noted as 4.03 days vs 3 days. Both the treatments were recognized safe and effective, especially in people listed as phototype III or IV. But MN therapy was preferred with an additional benefit of low-cost for SA.
