Histological inflammatory response to transvaginal polypropylene mesh: A systematic review

Urology Evidence based | Aug 26, 2017

Thomas D, et al. – The aim of this work was to conduct a systematic review and meta–analysis to analyze the inflammatory response following transvaginal implantation of polypropylene mesh. The results confirmed that polypropylene mesh elicits an inflammatory response which decreases over time, nevertheless no studies documented a complete resolution. Future research is needed in order determine if there is complete resolution of inflammation or if it persists.

Methods
  • Researchers performed a comprehensive literature search in the following databases from inception – April 2017: Ovid MEDLINE, Ovid EMBASE, and The Cochrane Library (Wiley).
  • Thereafter, studies retrieved were screened for eligibility against predefined inclusion/exclusion criteria.
  • In this review, the enrolled 23 articles were included.

Results
  • It was noted that following the implantation of polypropylene mesh, there are immediate and local inflammatory responses.
