Acute effects of air pollution on hospital admissions for asthma, COPD, and bronchiectasis in Ahvaz, Iran

Raji H, Riahi A, Borsi SH, et al. - Researchers evaluated the risk of hospital admissions attributable to asthma, COPD, and bronchiectasis, in Ahvaz, in correlation with short-term exposure to air pollutants. They used hospital admissions data, as well as data on air pollutants including O3, NO, NO2, SO2, CO, PM10, and PM2.5 from 2008 to 2018. PM2.5 was found to be related to a significant rise in hospital admissions for asthma and COPD. In both genders, increased hospital admissions because of bronchiectasis were reported in relation to PM10. For asthma and COPD, an increased risk of hospital admissions related to NO2 was reported. SO2 was identified to be related to the risk of hospital admissions of asthma and bronchiectasis. A link existed between CO and hospital admissions for COPD and bronchiectasis. Overall, a significantly increased risk of hospital admissions for asthma, COPD, and bronchiectasis was reported in correlation with short-term exposure to air pollutants in the adult and elderly population.
