Tang L, Day AT, Lee R, et al. - Researchers aimed at reporting on American Head and Neck Society (AHNS) surgeon submental flap (SMF) practice patterns. Further, they appraised variables linked with SMF complications. In this cross-sectional study, they administered an online survey to 782 AHNS surgeons between November 11, 2016, and December 31, 2016. Among 212 AHNS surgeons, 108 (50.9%) inscribed performing SMFs; complete responses were provided by 86. The analysis revealed diverse practice patterns of surgeons performing SMFs, although most use the flap for oral cavity reconstruction. While “very few” complications were encountered by 43% of surgeons performing the SMF, overall higher complication rates with the SMF were noted relative to other flaps. This may be due to limited experience with the SMF. Findings indicate increased training opportunities in SMF harvest and inset.
