Erectile dysfunction associated with incident atrial fibrillation: The Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA)

American Journal of Medicine Nov 22, 2019

Tanaka Y, Bundy JD, Allen NB, et al. - A total of 1,760 males from the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA), who completed self-reported erectile dysfunction evaluation at MESA Exam 5 (2010-2012) were examined in order to ascertain whether erectile dysfunction was individually related to incident atrial fibrillation following adjusting for conventional risk factors.

Ninty-four cases of incident atrial fibrillation were noted during the median follow-up of 3.8 years. At 4 years, a notable variation between men with and without erectile dysfunction for cumulative incident atrial fibrillation rates was noted. In the fully adjusted model, erectile dysfunction continued to be correlated with incident atrial fibrillation.

Thus, among older males in this prospective study, it was discovered that self-reported erectile dysfunction was related to incident atrial fibrillation.
