Effect of aerobic and resistance exercise on cardiac adipose tissues: Secondary analyses from a randomized clinical trial

Christensen RH, et al. - Given the emergence of epicardial and pericardial adipose tissues as significant risk factors for cardiovascular disease, researchers examined whether a 12-week endurance or resistance training intervention would regulate epicardial and pericardial adipose tissues. To that end, they performed a secondary analysis of a randomized, assessor-blinded clinical trial that included 50 individuals with abdominal obesity. They noted a significant reduction in epicardial adipose tissue mass in correlation to endurance and resistance training by 32% and 24%, respectively. While pericardial adipose tissue mass was reduced by 32% in correlation to resistance training, there was no effect of endurance training on pericardial adipose tissue. These data thereby suggested that different exercise modalities have potential preventive importance by means of reducing cardiac fat in individuals with abdominal obesity.
