Mapping diphtheria-pertussis-tetanus vaccine coverage in Africa, 2000–2016: A spatial and temporal modelling study

The Lancet Apr 12, 2019

Mosser JF, et al. - In this spatial and temporal modelling study, researchers provided the first comprehensive annual estimates of diphtheria-pertussis-tetanus (DPT)1, DPT3 coverage, and DPT 1–3 dropout among children aged 12–23 months at local (5 × 5 km) and subnational (second administrative unit) spatial resolutions for 52 countries across Africa from 2000 to 2016. This analysis was based on 183 surveys, and included data from 881,268 children in 49 African countries. Despite significant progress in Africa, the investigators noted that marked national and sub-national inequalities in the coverage of DPT persist across the continent. These outcomes can help identify areas with vulnerabilities in low coverage and the delivery of vaccines, and can ultimately support more accurate resource targeting to improve African children's vaccine coverage and health outcomes.
