TN government doctors strike work, hospital services unaffected

UNI Aug 28, 2019

Government doctors across Tamilnadu on 27th August observed a day-long strike over alleged improper implementation of Dynamic Assured Career Progression (DACP), besides increasing the total number of practitioners and reservation.

Following this, Health Minister told a TV channel that their demands were being considered and appealed them to call of their strike and come for talks. In Chennai, doctors staged a sit in protest at the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital and several other places. However, functioning of government hospitals were not affected as all emergency services, including surgeries, were performed to ensure that patients were not put to any hardships.

Tamil Nadu Government Doctors’ Association State Secretary Dr P Balakrishnan said as per GO 354, the review to hike the wages and promotion is done once in five years. However, the government failed to review it in October 2017 and it has been delayed by two years now. ''We want it to be conducted at the earliest'', he added. The protest was also to demand increasing the number of practitioners on par with the volume of patients they cater to.

Meanwhile, DMK President M K Stalin and BJP State President Ms Tamilisai Soundararajan appealed to the government doctors to withdraw the strike and urged the government to hold talks with them and find out a solution. In a statement  in Chennai, Mr Stalin said the doctors were on strike demanding salary as per the qualification, filling up of vacancies and job protection. He said the government should invite the striking doctors for talks and concede their demands. He also appealed to the striking doctors to call off their strike in the interest of public.
