Six medical students of CMCH on fast on hostel facility

PTI Jul 12, 2018

Six senior students of the Calcutta Medical College and Hospital have been on an indefinite fast for the second day on July 11 demanding accommodation in the new hostel which is alloted for only first year students.

The fasting students, belonging to second, third and fourth year, alleged that about one hundred of their classmates were in a precarious situation for inadequate hostel facility and the authorities had turned a blind eye to their woes. A third year student, said "we have inadequate hostel facility for the last three years and in the new hostel building only freshers have been alloted rooms. This is discriminatory."

He said the old hostel for seniors was in bad shape and did not have enough beds for all. Last week, the senior students had gheraoed the Principal Ucchal Bhadra for several hours on the issue. Bhadra said, as per MCI guidelines freshers and seniors cannot be accommodated in the same hostel to prevent incidents of ragging. He said the college authorities were ready to address the problem faced by agitating students and invited them for talks after completion of admission process tomorrow to arrive at a solution. "But the students have gone for fast. We urge them to withdraw the fast," he said.
