Jipmer receives Online Radiology Service

Jawharlal Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education and Research(Jipmer) has received ‘Online Radiology Service (ORS)’ from Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (MOHFW), Government of India.


According to a Jipmer release on April 15, the name of the software through which this service is implemented is known as ‘CollabDDS (Collaborative Digital Diagnosis System)’. It is provided free of cost to Jipmer by MOHFW. In South India, Jipmer is the first government. Medical Institution to receive it. The purpose of this service is to provide online consultation by Jipmer Radiologist to another Remote Doctor/Centre for diagnosis & treatment planning (Tele-Radiology).

The Centre is providing this service due to acute shortage of expert Radiologists in remote/rural areas of the country. The CollabDDS Software is funded by National Knowledge Network (NKN) and jointly developed by National Informatic Centre (NIC) Delhi, CSIR Chandigarh, IIT Bombay & AIIMS Delhi. CollabDDS is a multi-pronged versatile tool which would provide the benefits of Radiological Services to the Medical & Dental Colleges for ‘Remote End Consultation’, Real Time Consultation’, ‘Peer-to-Peer Consultation’ and ‘Knowledge Sharing, Education and Research’.

MOHFW is providing the necessary equipment. NIC will act as the technology partner and will provide the CORS (CollabDDS Online Radiology Services) application, training and support. One of the Radiology Consultant of JIPMER has been given training and CollabDDS Software has been installed and tested with NIC Delhi. A per the instructions from MOHFW, in first phase (6 months) ten Medical Centres of South India have been identified by JIPMER to provide this service and later in phase 2 (7 to 12 months) the service will be extended to other centres of South India.Jipmer as Regional Resource Centre will play the role of Centre of Excellence (COE).
Jipmer Director Dr Vishnu Bhat thanked NIC Puducherry for providing National Knowledge Network (NKN) connectivity and time-to-time advice in effective implementation of this service.
