Family of infant who died in hospital to register new complaint

IANS Aug 07, 2017

The family of an infant, who had died in a hospital here due to alleged "medical negligence" in April, on Saturday said they will again register a complaint against the establishment with the West Bengal Clinical Establishment Regulatory Commission (WBCERC) after the hospital denied any "negligence".

In April, four-month-old Kuheli Chakraborty, who was admitted to the Apollo Gleneagles Hospital for a colonoscopy, allegedly died of an anaesthetic overdose, his family said.Subsequently, the family had registered a complaint of medical negligence against the establishment with the Commission. The private hospital was asked to cough up Rs 30 lakh as compensation by the Commission for alleged negligence in treatment of the infant leading to her death."The hospital has sent a letter on Saturday asking for our details so that they can pay the compensation as directed by the commission. But they, in the letter, mentioned there was no medical negligence on their part. They denied medical negligence.

"If so, why has the hospital agreed to pay the compensation? They should have appealed to a higher authority against the Commission's order. We will, once again, file a complaint with the commission," said Kuheli's father.Kuheli's mother added: "We do not want compensation, instead we want punishment."Contacted for their response, the hospital authorities declined to comment.
