Dr. Agarwal's Eye Hospital, India's leading eye care chain, will soon be offering B&L's Hypersonic Vitrectomy System, New Stellaris Elite[TM] Vision Enhancement System, an innovative technology for removing blood from the eye using ultrasound unlike other machines which uses cutters. This latest technology is the first-of-its-kind in the world, created on the surgical platform which would allow surgeons to have maximum control over surgical procedures by improving the outcomes for patients with vitreoretinal problems. The global clinical trial for this has been done by Dr. Amar Agarwal at Dr. Agarwal's group of Eye Hospitals.

Talking about this innovation, Dr. Amar Agarwal, Chairman, Dr. Agarwal's Eye Hospital said, "The technology for performing vitrectomy has changed little over the last 40 years when the first single port, multi-functional pneumatic cutter was invented. With this patented technology, this would be the first and only hypersonic device for vitreous removal which is US FDA approved. It would use a novel, single needle design, a continuous open-port system and would use highly localized tissue liquefaction zone at the edge of the port to liquefy vitreous for exceptional control during tissue removal."

The faster vitreous is cut, the less is the amount of traction on it and therefore there is decreased risk on the retina. Modern vitrectomy technology today operates at speeds up to 5,000-7,500 cuts per minute. Vitesse would enable to increase the cutting rate to approximately 1.7 million cuts per minute with the purpose to significantly decrease the amount of vitreous traction that occurs in vitrectomy.

Mr. Sanjay Bhutani, Managing Director, Bausch & Lomb India Pvt. Ltd. quoted that Vitesse hypersonic vitrectomy system, which represents the first major vitreous removal innovation in 40 years, is expected to be commercially available exclusively on Bausch & Lomb's new Stellaris Elite[TM] Vision Enhancement System sometime in 2018.

The next-generation Stellaris Elite[TM] has been primarily designed for surgical platform for retinal surgery, which would provide ultimate control and efficiency during the procedure and would offer many new cutting-edge innovations and greater opportunities to add upgrades and enhancements in future. Vitesse would be able to provide a safer option to patients as it would help remove vitreous efficiently with less energy usage during retinal surgeries which would minimize the chances of injury. Faster cut rates and liquefaction of vitreous should ensure less vitreoretinal traction thereby minimizing complications such as retinal detachment, while performing procedures close to the retina.

Vitesse would give surgeons the options of doing vitrectomy in more complicated cases of the retina, which would be on account of its better control and efficiency.
