DBT, govt of India to fund study of mental illness genomics

Dr Satyajit Mayor, President of National Centre for Cell Biology, (NCCB) Bengaluru said that an Accelerated Programme for Discovery of Brain Disorders (ADBS), a study to determine the genomics of brain disorders will help us understand and also discover drugs for treatment of disorders like schizophrenia, bipolar disorders and other mental illnesses.
The study is being undertaken along with The National Institute of Mental Health and Neuroscience (NIMHANS) and the Institute for Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine under the (DBT), said Dr Mayor at the International Congress for Cell Biology (ICCB 2018) held on Wednesday.
Dr Mayor said that the study will be funded by the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Government of India. About 250 families of patients with mental illnesses will be studied. They would undergo tests involving MRI scans, brain imaging to determine the genetic reasons causing the disorders, Dr Mayor said. The repository of stem cell data would be made public for further studies, he said. CCMB Director Dr Rakesh Sharma, was also present.
