Which adolescent factors predict alcohol misuse in young adulthood? A co-twin comparisons study
Addiction Nov 28, 2019
Stephenson M, Barr P, Ksinan A, et al. - Researchers applied a co-twin comparison design to examine if differences between co-twins in a wide array of adolescent risk factors predict differences in young adult alcohol misuse. In this longitudinal study, they used relationships between characteristics of the sample as adolescents to prognosticate young adult alcohol misuse in individual-level analyses and co-twin comparisons. From the FinnTwin12 study, they analyzed 3,402 individuals (1,435 complete twin pairs; 36% monozygotic; 57% female) in this work. Outcomes suggest adolescent substance use, positive alcohol expectancies, and higher academic performance as robust predictors of later alcohol misuse.
