New England Journal of Medicine Feb 27, 2020
Blount BC, Karwowski MP, Shields PG, et al. - This study intended to assess the relationship between Vitamin E acetate and electronic-cigarette or vaping, product use–associated lung injury (EVALI). Researchers obtained bronchoalveolar-lavage (BAL) fluids from 51 individuals with EVALI in 16 states and from 99 healthy participants who were part of an ongoing study of smoking involving nonsmokers, exclusive users of e-cigarettes or vaping products, and exclusive cigarette smokers that were initiated in 2015. they conducted isotope dilution mass spectrometry to estimate several priority toxicants: vitamin E acetate, plant oils, medium-chain triglyceride oil, coconut oil, petroleum distillates, and diluent terpenes using the BAL fluid. In the United States, vitamin E acetate was correlated with EVALI in a convenience sample of 51 patients in 16 states.
