Vitamin D receptor is overexpressed in the duodenum of patients with irritable bowel syndrome

Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology Aug 28, 2020

Miura K, Oshima T, Ito C, et al. - In patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), the intestinal mucosal expression of bile acid receptors was analyzed. Researchers conducted intestinal biopsies in patients with IBS and controls, evaluating levels of vitamin D receptor (VDR), farnesoid X receptor (FXR), takeda‐G‐protein‐receptor‐5 (TGR5), claudins, and transient‐receptor‐potential‐cation‐channel‐subfamily‐V‐member 6 via western blotting. In patients with IBS, mast cell counts in the second part of the duodenum were significantly increased vs controls. In the duodenum and terminal ileum of patients with IBS, VDR protein levels were significantly higher vs controls, though not in the cecum or rectum. There was no difference in FXR and TGR5 protein levels in any part of the intestine. in IBS, VDR‐positive cryptal epithelia were distributed not only at basal crypt, but along the upper part of the basal crypt epithelial cells.
