Vitamin D and falls in older African American women: The PODA randomized clinical trial

Journal of the American Geriatrics Society May 03, 2019

Aloia JF, et al. - Researchers investigated whether falls could be prevented by maintaining serum 25(OH)D levels above 30 ng/mL in the Physical Performance, Osteoporosis and Vitamin D in African American Women trial. Study participants included healthy black women older than 60 years of age with serum 25(OH)D levels between 8 and 26 ng/mL. Placebo or active vitamin D was randomly administered to participants, and a double-dummy design was used to adjust vitamin D3 dose to maintain serum 25(OH)D above 30 ng/mL in the active group. Every 3 months, participants were assessed using a falls questionnaire for 3 years. Findings revealed no beneficial impact of maintaining serum 25(OH)D above 30 ng/mL on the prevention of falls in healthy older black women vs the Institute of Medicine recommendation (20 ng/mL).
