Utility of liquid-based cytology on residual needle rinses collected from core needle biopsy for lung nodule diagnosis

Cancer Medicine May 28, 2021

Lan Z, Zhang X, Ma X, et al. - Researchers undertook this retrospective analysis to determine the diagnostic value of liquid-based cytology on residual pulmonary core needle biopsy (CNB) material obtained from needle rinses. They reviewed computed tomography-guided lung CNB specimens as well as relevant cytology of CNB needle rinses (CNR) from July 2017 to June 2020. This study included 406 patients, each of whom had a CNB procedure. Findings revealed that a high diagnostic efficacy for distinguishing malignant from benign lesions in the lung was offered by CNR with higher nuclear and cytoplasmic resolution than CNB. With the employment of combined CNR/CNB, experts obtained optimal results in decreasing the false-negative rate and the subtyping of non-small cell lung cancer.
