Use of saliva flow rate measurement in minor salivary glands autotransplantation for treatment of severe dry eye disease

British Journal of Ophthalmology Mar 10, 2021

Su JZ, Wang Z, Liu XJ, et al. - Researchers sought to use minor salivary glands’ flow rate (MSGFR) measurement in minor salivary glands (MSGs) autotransplantation for the treatment of severe dry eye disease (DED). MSGs autotransplantations were conducted in 18 eyes (17 patients) with severe DED. The donor sites involved the lower lip in 12 eyes, the upper lip in 5 eyes and buccal mucosa in 1 eye. MSGs transplantation was found to be effective in the treatment of severe DED. Preoperative MSGFR was positively associated with the amount of postoperative lubrication and the treatment impact. The measurement of MSGFR and the selection of the donor site should be critical steps prior to the operation.
