Use of active workstations in individuals with overweight or obesity: A systematic review
Obesity Feb 10, 2019
Josaphat KJ, et al. - Among 19 included studies (two with school-aged children), researchers reviewed the impact of active workstations on the health and work outcomes of participants with overweight or obesity. Nine studies used treadmill, 3 used cycling, 1 used stepping, and 12 used standing desks. For most of the active workstations, a decrease in sedentary time and an increase in physical activity level and energy expenditure were observed. Investigators observed that the treadmill and the cycle desk improved glycemic control, but the treadmill desk was the only workstation that reported improved work performance and helps in body-weight management (body fat percentage, body weight, waist and hip circumference). For decreasing occupational sedentariness, active workstations are a promising solution. In general, active workstations have a positive impact on energy expenditure and physical activity in overweight and obesity individuals.
