Urinary tract infections after urinary diversion – Different occurrence patterns in patients with ileal conduit and orthotopic neobladder
Urology Apr 11, 2018
Mano R, et al. - Authors compared the incidence rate of urinary tract infections and related pathogens between patients with an ileal conduit and an orthotopic neobladder urinary diversion. Results demonstrated a significantly higher risk of UTI in patients with a neobladder during the first 3 months after surgery, and it was seen to be comparable to ileal conduit during subsequent follow-up. Preoperative counseling could be facilitated regarding the expected risk of UTI following urinary diversion. They noted that in conduit patients (58%), E. Coli was the most common pathogen , and Klebsiella spp. in neobladder patients (29%).
