Urinary metabolites and risk of coronary heart disease: A prospective investigation among urban Chinese adults

Nutrition, Metabolism & Cardiovascular Diseases Nov 09, 2019

Yoon HS, Yang JJ, Rivera ES, et al. - Including 275 incident cases and 275 matched controls (127 pairs of men and 148 pairs of women), this nested case-control study was undertaken to determine the link between urinary metabolites and coronary heart disease (CHD) risk among Chinese adults. A pre-defined metabolomics panel was used to measure 50 metabolites, which were adjusted using urinary creatinine. A positive link of urinary tryptophan with incident CHD was revealed after adjusting for traditional CHD risk factors. Among people with dyslipidemia, the tryptophan-CHD link was more evident as compared with those without the condition. Researchers found no significant links of other metabolites with CHD risk among all study participants. Overall, a possible link of elevated urinary tryptophan with CHD risk was suggested in Chinese adults, particularly for those with dyslipidemia.
