Ureteroscopy is more cost effective than shock wave lithotripsy for stone treatment: Systematic review and meta-analysis
World Journal of Urology May 16, 2018
Geraghty RM, et al. - Researchers sought to compare the cost of ureteroscopy (URS) and shockwave lithotripsy (SWL) for treatment of stones. They conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis based on Cochrane and PRISMA standards for all studies reporting on the comparative cost of treatment between URS and SWL. Findings suggested the complication rates to be non-significantly in favour of SWL whereas re-treatment rates were non-significantly in favour of URS. Limited evidence suggested that compared to SWL, URS was less expensive. On sub-analysis, for both stones < 10 and ≥ 10 mm and for proximal ureteric stones, URS was significantly cost-effective.
