United States’ performance on emergency department throughput, 2006 to 2016
Annals of Emergency Medicine Apr 18, 2021
Abdulai ASB, et al. - Via performing a retrospective cross-sectional analysis of data from the National Hospital Ambulatory Medical Care Survey from 2006 to 2016, researchers sought to determine recent trends in emergency department (ED) throughput nationally. Survey-weighted generalized linear models were used to ascertain changes over time. Findings revealed an increase in the number of ED visits from 119.2 million to 145.6 million between 2006 and 2016. Overall, ED timeliness has improved from 2006 to 2016. However, there has been a reduction in the proportion of the sickest patients discharged within 8 hours of arrival, although this may be due to enhanced ancillary testing or specially consultation over time.
