Underreporting of fall injuries of older adults: Implications for wellness visit fall risk screening
Journal of the American Geriatrics Society Jul 20, 2018
Hoffman GJ, et al. - In this retrospective observational study performed in the US with fee-for-service Medicare beneficiaries aged 65 and older (N=47,215) as study participants, researchers compared the accuracy of and factors influencing the accuracy of self-reported fall-related injuries (SFRIs) vs administratively obtained FRIs (AFRIs). They found that when inquired, 72% of those who receive Medicare-reimbursed health care for FRIs did not report a fall injury. Findings suggested the importance of addressing underreporting in primary care of nonwhite and healthier older adults to improve preventive efforts. Improved sensitivity may be achieved with redesigned questions, for example, that address stigma of attributing injury to falling.
