Type D personality is associated with depressive symptoms and clinical activity in inflammatory bowel disease

Alimentary Pharmacology and Therapeutics May 15, 2021

Bruno S, Jordi U, Botte F, et al. - This study was carried out to evaluate the prevalence of Type D personality in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients and investigate potential associations with disease courses. Researchers investigated the relationships between Type D (Type D Scale‐14), depressive symptoms (Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale depression subscore ≥ 11), and recurrent IBD amongst Swiss IBD cohort patients. They evaluated the IBD disease course by the future occurrence of active disease (Crohn Disease Activity Index ≥ 150/Modified Truelove & Witts activity index ≥10) and several IBD‐relevant endpoints. In this study, 672 (29.5%) had Type D amongst 2275 patients (1,005 ulcerative colitis, 1,270 Crohn disease). Amongst IBD patients, type D personality's prevalence was comparable with its prevalence in the general population. It has been reported that type D was strongly correlated with depressive symptoms and showed modest independent associations with IBD prognosis.
