Type 2 diabetes remission: Economic evaluation of the DiRECT/Counterweight-Plus weight management programme within a primary care randomized controlled trial
Diabetic Medicine May 01, 2019
Xin Y, et al. – From the UK National Health Service (NHS) perspective, researchers estimated the cost of implementing the Counterweight-Plus program and its 1-year cost-effectiveness in terms of diabetes remission vs usual care. Findings revealed that 1-year program costs were estimated at £1,223 per participant under trial conditions. The cost for 1 year of remission of diabetes was £2,564. Investigators suggested that remission of type 2 diabetes within 1 year could be obtained at a cost below the annual cost of diabetes (including complications). Providing a reasonable proportion of remissions could be maintained over time, with multiple medical gains expected and immediate social benefits, there was a case for shifting resources within the budgets for diabetes care to provide support for people with type 2 diabetes to try remission.
