Trends, predictors and in-hospital outcomes of the next day discharge approach after transcatheter mitral valve repair
The American Journal of Cardiology Aug 03, 2021
Grant JK, Vincent L, Ebner B, et al. - Researchers used the National Inpatient Sample (from 2013 to 2018) to assess trends, predictors as well as consequences of the next day discharge (NDD) approach following transcatheter mitral valve repair procedures with the MitraClip device. An upward trend from 18.3% to 46.0% in the proportion of patients being discharged using the NDD approach was observed between 2013 and 2018. Non-NDD was predicted by female gender, black race, and low median household income, as well as by anemia, iron deficiency anemia, major depressive disorder, thrombocytopenia, obesity and end stage renal disease. Overall, the observed trends may indicate improving operator experience, advancement in vascular access device closures and techniques, as well as prioritization of reducing length of stay. Larger-sized multicenter, randomized trials should be conducted to corroborate the feasibility as well as safety of this approach.
