Trends of anogenital warts among sexually transmitted disease clinic patients - Sexually Transmitted Disease Surveillance Network, United States, 2010–2016
The Journal of Infectious Diseases Dec 05, 2018
Mann LM, et al. - As human papillomavirus (HPV) types 6 and 11 cause approximately 90% of genital warts, in the US, HPV vaccination has been recommended for females ≤26 years; and since 2011, for males ≤21 years and gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM) ≤26 years. Researchers sought for the trends in the annual prevalence of anogenital warts (AGW) from 2010–2016 by sex and sex of sex partners via analyzing data from 27 clinics participating in the sexually transmitted disease (STD) Surveillance Network (SSuN). Outcomes suggest declines in AGW suggesting a decline in HPV morbidity among populations attending STD clinics, including men who have sex with women only (MSW), MSM, and women. As expected, consistent declines in younger age groups were noted following the implementation of HPV vaccination. However, older age groups also displayed declines which seemed not correlated with vaccination.
