Trends in opioid prescribing among hemodialysis patients, 2007–2014

American Journal of Nephrology Dec 17, 2018

Daubresse M, et al. - Considering the previous studies indicating the increased opioid prescribing in hemodialysis (HD) patients through 2010, researchers investigated if this trend continued after 2010 or declined with national trends. They performed a longitudinal cohort study of 484,745 HD patients in the United States Renal Data System/Medicare data. Outcomes revealed opioid prescription in 62.4% of HD patients in 2007. In 2010, this increased to 63.2% and then declined to 53.7% by 2014. This suggests a decline in opioid prescribing among HD patients between 2012 and 2014. However, compared to the general US population, HD patients received 3.2-fold more opioid prescriptions per person. The patients were primarily prescribed oxycodone and hydrocodone.
