Journal of Arthroplasty Apr 22, 2019
Sarpong NO, et al. - Three cohorts of candidates based on year of surgery (2006-2009 [n=7,111], 2010-2013 [n=71,943], 2014-2016 [n=142,710] were examined to assess trends of the length of stay (LOS) and 30-day complication and unplanned readmissions after total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Researchers observed that LOS reduced significantly over time in the 2006-2009 cohort (3.7 days) vs the 2010-2013 cohort (3.3) as well as the 2014-2016 cohort. Significantly lower rates of deep vein thrombosis, sepsis, urinary tract infection were noted in the 2010-2013 cohort and 2014-2016 cohort. A decline in the rate of total 30-day complications was recorded in the 2006-2009 cohort (5.37%) in comparison with 2010-2013 (3.86%) and 2014-2016 (3.13%). The thirty-day readmission rate was also observed decreasing in the 2010-2013 cohort (3.63%) vs 2013-2016 (3.23%).
