Trends in cardiovascular disease morbidity and mortality in American Indians over 25 years: The Strong Heart Study
Journal of the American Heart Association Nov 05, 2019
Muller CJ, Noonan CJ, MacLehose RF, et al. - Researchers analyzed trends in morbidity and mortality attributed to cardiovascular disease in American Indians aged 30 to 85, over 25 years, to determine if any shift has occurred in the incidence, mortality, and prevalence of cardiovascular disease during this period in this population. Using data from two prospective studies, ie, the Strong Heart Study and Strong Heart Family Study, a total of 5,627 individuals aged 30 to 85 years during follow-up for cardiovascular disease events were analyzed by applying Poisson regression. They found a reduction in the incidence of cardiovascular disease over a generation in an American Indian cohort. A greater reduction in mortality was observed among men, while the observed decrease in the prevalence was more for women. In view of these trends, it might be inferred that case survival has improved more among men vs women.
