Trends in calories and nutrients of beverages in U.S. chain restaurants, 2012–2017
American Journal of Preventive Medicine Jul 23, 2019
Frelier JM, et al. - Using a restaurant nutrition database (MenuStat, 2012–2017), researchers analyzed trends in calorie and nutrient content of beverages (n=13,879) on the menus of 63 U.S. chain restaurants. From 2012 to 2017, significantly higher calorie content was found in traditional sugar-sweetened beverages, sweetened teas, and blended milk-based beverages (eg, milkshakes), as far as newly introduced beverages were concerned. They reported significantly increased sugar and reduced saturated fat, for all newly introduced sweetened beverages. From 2012 to 2017, consistently high calories, sugar, and saturated fat were found in sweetened beverages available in large chain restaurants. Furthermore, there was a substantial increase in their quantity and variety during the same time period.
