Trends and disparities in inpatient costs for eye trauma in the United States (2001-2014)
American Journal of Ophthalmology Jun 09, 2019
Iftikhar M, et al. - Via this retrospective population-based cross-sectional study, the trends and disparities in inpatient costs for eye trauma in the United States from 2001 through 2014 were determined. Analyzing National Inpatient Sample, researchers noted the inpatient costs totaled $1.72 billion from 2001 through 2014 for eye trauma. Relatively constant mean cost (95% CI) per stay was noted: $12,000 ($11,000–13,000) in 2001 to $11,000 ($10,000–12,000) in 2014. African-Americans vs Whites, patients in the highest income quartile vs those in the lowest, uninsured patients vs publicly insured patients, teaching hospitals vs non-teaching ones, and the West vs the South (2.4; 2.0-2.8) had more frequently showed cost in the highest quartile. Addressing associated disparities may potentially reduce inpatient costs of eye trauma.
