Treatment of superficial basal cell carcinoma by topical photodynamic therapy with fractionated 5-aminolevulinic acid 20% versus two stage topical methylaminolevulinic acid: Results of a randomized controlled trial

British Journal of Dermatology Sep 13, 2017

Kessels JPHM, et al. - This research analyzed the superiority of 2-fold 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA)-photodynamic therapy (PDT) compared to conventional methyl-ester (MAL)-PDT for superficial basal cell carcinoma (sBCC). This approach displayed fewer recurrences, despite the lack of prominent variation between both the treatment groups. It, however, led to higher pain scores and more post-treatment side-effects compared to MAL-PDT.
