Treatment of femoral neck fractures in patients 45 to 64 years of age
Injury Nov 22, 2018
Johnson JP, et al. - Researchers analyzed records of patients between the ages of 45-64, from 2002 to 2014, sustaining femoral neck fractures and treated with internal fixation, hip hemiarthroplasty or total hip arthroplasty to assess their in-hospital outcomes. Over the study period, a 4.2-fold increase in the use of total hip arthroplasty in the treatment of femoral neck fractures was observed among these patients. They identified an associated increased hospital cost, length of stay and complications with this treatment. Additionally, a stepwise increase in the use of arthroplasty was noted as age increased in the study population, and it appears that hemiarthroplasty is being used with a different patient population.
