Transfusion during medical evacuation of combat casualties in Afghanistan with acute and 30-day survival

JAMA Oct 27, 2017

Shackelford SA, et al. - The relationship of prehospital transfusion and time to initial transfusion with injury survival was analyzed in this study. It was concluded that the blood product transfusion prehospital or within minutes of injury was related to greater 24-hour and 30-day survival than delayed transfusion or no transfusion among medically evacuated US military combat causalities in Afghanistan. In this setting, the outcomes support prehospital transfusion.
