Transesophageal echocardiography during cardiopulmonary resuscitation is associated with shorter compression pauses compared with transthoracic echocardiography

Annals of Emergency Medicine Feb 22, 2019

Fair J, et al. - Researchers compared transesophageal echocardiography to transthoracic echocardiography for ED point-of-care ultrasonography during cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), focusing on the duration of chest compression pauses between the two modalities and manual pulse checks on video recordings of cardiac arrest resuscitations. A total of 25 patients were included. Overall, 139 pulse check CPR pauses were analyzed among participants during cardiac arrest. With transesophageal echocardiography, they noted shorter pulse check times vs transthoracic echocardiography for ED point-of-care ultrasonography during cardiac arrest resuscitations. In addition, when using transthoracic echocardiography for point-of-care ultrasonography during ED cardiac arrest resuscitations, careful attention to compression pause duration is required.
