Three-dimensional finite element analysis of silk protein rod implantation after core decompression for osteonecrosis of the femoral head

BMC Musculoskeletal Disorders Nov 21, 2019

Huang L, Chen F, Wang S, et al. - The biomechanical properties of the silk protein material by regular compression, torsion, and three-point bending tests was examined in order to investigate the likelihood of a robust and resilient silk protein biomaterial as a new alternative implant. When contrasted with simple core decompression, less displacement and surface stress at the femoral head weight-bearing area was shown by silk protein rod implantation, however, it was more than fibula or tantalum rod implantation. Between the silk rod, fibula, and tantalum rod implantations, along with extra modifiable properties, comparable impacts on the surface stress of the femoral head was noted, which suggests the use of silk protein as an apt biomaterial in osteonecrosis surgery.
